From our beginnings as Epsilon Design Engineers in 2013 to becoming Hexagon Design Consultants, our growth has been driven by a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions for the rail and infrastructure sectors. 2013 | Epsilon Design Engineers Founded
Epsilon Design Engineers was established to support the wider Cairn Cross business, bringing specialist engineering design capabilities in-house to improve efficiency, collaboration, and project delivery.
2013 | First Project: Stoke Whielden Road Bogie Drop
The company secured its first project, delivering design services for the Stoke Whielden Road Bogie Drop scheme, marking the beginning of its journey within the rail infrastructure sector.
2014 | Relocation to Morley, Leeds
Due to continued growth, the business moved to a modern office in Morley, West Yorkshire, providing an enhanced working environment and capacity for an expanding team.
2016 | Holyhead Carriage Wash
Achieved a significant milestone with Network Rail approving a detailed design submission as part of a Design & Build contract, demonstrating the company’s growing reputation and technical expertise.
2018 | Harwich Wheel Lathe Facility Design
Delivered GRIP Stages 2-4 design services for a new wheel lathe facility at Harwich, supporting Greater Anglia’s rolling stock maintenance operations.
2020 | Greenholme Mills Detailed Design
Provided detailed infrastructure design services for the Greenholme Mills scheme as part of a Design & Build contract, supporting the delivery of key rail infrastructure improvements.
2020 | Oxley Depot Pit Reconstruction Design
Completed infrastructure design works for the reconstruction of depot maintenance pits at Oxley Depot, enhancing facilities for rail operations and maintenance.
2023 | New Managing Director Appointed
Ian Bald joined Hexagon Design Consultants as Managing Director, bringing extensive industry experience gained through his successful career with Cairn Cross.
2023 | Rebrand to Hexagon Design Consultants
Epsilon Design Engineers evolved into Hexagon Design Consultants, launching a new brand identity, logo, and website that reflected the company’s continued growth and future ambitions.
2023 | Peterborough Maintenance Hub
Supported the design and build of a new maintenance structure for GB Railfreight on the East Coast Main Line, delivering a modern facility to support rail operations.
2024 | Tonbridge Rail Depot Completion
Successfully completed the design and build of a locomotive maintenance depot for GB Railfreight at Tonbridge, delivering a modern, purpose-built facility within a live rail environment.
2025 | Principal Engineer Joins the Team
Cris Scrivener joined Hexagon Design Consultants as Principal Engineer, strengthening the business with a wealth of industry knowledge and technical leadership.
2025 | First Branded Company Vehicle
Hexagon’s first fully branded company van took to the roads, marking another milestone in the company’s growth and increasing brand presence across the UK rail industry.
2026 | Team Expansion
Hexagon Design Consultants continued its growth with the appointment of three experienced professionals to its CAD team. Damien Eyres, Conrad Greening, and Mark Davidson joined the business as Senior CAD Technicians, strengthening the company’s technical capabilities and supporting the delivery of complex multidisciplinary design projects across the rail and infrastructure sectors
2026 | Canton Bogie Drop Completion
The new Canton Bogie Drop Facility officially opened its doors, providing a modern maintenance solution for the rail industry. Throughout the project lifecycle, Hexagon Design Consultants delivered Principal Designer support, Temporary Works design, and a range of Permanent Works design services, playing a key role in the successful delivery of the facility from concept through to completion.
