Kings Heath Maintenance Facility Design
DESCRIPTION.
Appointed under a design-and-construct contract, Hexagon delivered the full outline and detailed design of a new two-road maintenance facility at Siemens existing Kings Heath depot. This key project enhanced the depot’s operational capacity and provided modern infrastructure to support ongoing fleet maintenance.
REQUIREMENTS
The project required a road diversion to accommodate the new facility, involving excavation of the existing embankment and installation of a gabion retaining wall. As part of the works, existing services within the road were diverted to maintain functionality during and after construction. The structural design included steel tube-driven piling to support the foundations, two 90-metre maintenance roads with integrated inspection pits, and an insulated, clad portal frame superstructure. Works also involved the diversion of the existing wheel lathe road and the incorporation of a new permanent way S&C. Electrical requirements for the new facility were designed and integrated with the existing power supply, ensuring seamless operation. In addition, Hexagon developed all necessary temporary works designs, including piling mats, crane support foundations, and detailed formwork for the concrete pours.
